LGBT History Month: February 2019

The College celebrated LGBT History Month this February with a series of awareness-raising sessions for students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or undecided.

Organised in consultation with the Student Union, these drop-in awareness-raising sessions took place at Afan, Brecon Beacons, Neath, and Newtown Colleges throughout February. Attendees met other LGBT+ students, discussed the issues that matter to them, and suggested actions that the College can do to support LGBT students.

The four college libraries marked LGBT History Month with information displays throughout February, advertising the month, and raising awareness of the LGBT books available in their library collections.

The College also flew the rainbow pride flag over every college and campus, to signal our commitment to LGBT equality.

LGBT History Month aims to increase the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, their history, lives and their experiences. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges that LGBT+ people still face, and call for everyone to contribute to an LGBT+ inclusive society.

It is celebrated every February, to commemorate the 2003 abolition of Section 28, a law introduced in 1988 that banned schools and colleges from portraying homosexuality in a positive light.
