NPTC Group of Colleges is in the running for a top award as part of Wales Responsible Business Awards for 2019.
The College’s HR department has been shortlisted for the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water Wellbeing at Work Award. The team have introduced several initiatives in an effort to support staff who are experiencing periods of poor mental health. It’s part of the overarching Wellness at Work Programme at the College.
Melanie Dunbar, HR Manager at the College said the work would continue: “The longer-term aim is to create a culture where the stigma around mental health is removed so that staff feel informed, empowered and able to talk openly.”
A dedicated team of mental health first aiders have been trained and are active in supporting staff with mental ill health. The College has arranged weekly yoga classes for staff as well as wellness at work days that include mindfulness sessions, art therapy classes an Indian head massage. In addition, tea and talk events are held to encourage staff to attend and talk openly about mental health in the workplace.
The awards are organised by Business in the Community Cymru (BITC) which recognises those who have reached the top of the responsible business list in Wales. The College is one of three shortlisted in the Wellbeing category. NPTC Group of Colleges is also the main sponsor of the Education Award. Winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner on June 27 in Cardiff. The awards are held and judged by independent business leaders to be exemplars who celebrate, champion and, crucially, inspire others through their responsible behaviour and practice.
