Live with Lee Stafford and ‘Brave the Shave’

Afan College welcomed back celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford for another of his incredible masterclasses.

The new students of the Lee Stafford Academy of Hairdressing, Barbering and Applied Therapy were thrilled when Lee took time out of his busy schedule to demonstrate his recipe for a ‘Twisted Tong’. While running through his curling technique, Lee talked students about his path to stardom. From humble beginnings as an enthusiastic amateur cutting hair in his parents’ dining room, Lee has become one of the most recognised names in the industry.

Lee answered questions on what qualities he looks for in young stylists, his favourite hair trends and what up and coming hairdressers, the students should follow for inspiration.

Also in attendance was fellow salon owner and friend Andrew Price. Andrew, who owns nine salons throughout Wales and currently employs over 120 staff, also was on hand to answer questions on what Salons look for in new stylists and what shows and events the students should think about attending.

The new academy is the first and only one of its kind in Wales. The training programme has been developed by Lee himself with specialists, to train not only the students, but also the College’s experienced hair and barbering staff.  The students will learn specially designed ‘recipes’ which are unique to Lee Stafford Academies, reflecting some of the most cutting-edge styles seen in salons across the UK.

While Lee was at Afan College, he kindly volunteered to participate in a fundraising activity with Transition and Retention Coordinator, Gail Dubec. Gail had decided to participate in ‘Brave the Shave’ for Macmillan Nurses, in memory of a close friend and work colleague, and asked Lee if he would be the one to shave her head.

The whole college was on hand to lend their support and cheered on as Lee plaited Gail’s hair into four plaits and then cut them off before shaving the rest of her hair.

An emotional and very proud Gail revealed to everyone that she had so far raised over £1000, far exceeding her original total of £600. She was then presented with an additional cheque for £551 from the marketing team, who had raised money with a grand prize draw at the previous evening’s Student Awards.

Since her ‘Brave the Shave’, donations have exceeded £1800 and are still coming in!
