Ann’s talents recognised at Swansea’s Got Textile Talent

Newtown College student Ann Prys-Thomas scooped a prize at this year’s Swansea’s Got Textiles Talent. The event brings together teachers and specialists to share great practice skills and knowledge, showcasing the brilliant opportunities there are for careers in textiles and the wider surface pattern field.

This year it celebrated the work of students from local schools and colleges with submissions from institutions across Wales for the competition categories r Creativity, Innovation and Enthusiasm.

Ann who is in her first year of the Level 3 UAL Sustainable Textiles course won a prize in the Innovation category for students who demonstrate future forward thinking, achieving the Bright Sparks, Future Forward Sustainable Practice Prize.

The event culminated in a prize-giving ceremony hosted by guest judge, S4C’s Huw Rees and filmed by Tinopolis.  Programme Manager Georgia McKie, BA (Hons) and MD (Hons) Surface Pattern and Textiles said: ‘We were so impressed with the extent of Ann’s collection and the multidisciplinary skill set she utilised to produce it. The work from all students looks beautiful and makes an excellent impact in our exhibition, thank you so much for taking part.’

Newtown College Art and Design Lecturer Carys Jones said: ‘We are so pleased Ann was recognised for her innovative work and that our students have this platform to exhibit their creative skills. It allows students and lecturers to share great design ideas and helps to inspire routes for future opportunities and career progression. There is such a wide range of industries students can go into from studying sustainable textiles from fashion and interior design to stationary graphics, vehicle design interiors to theatre sets and costumes. Swansea’s Got Textile Talent helps to recognise the industry skills and talents learners achieve.’
