Newtown College is thrilled to announce the ongoing success of its employability programme, which has been providing students with invaluable insights into various career paths through regular visits from local businesses.
The programme offers a comprehensive range of benefits, including CV workshops, interview preparation, site visits, and hands-on industry experience. These initiatives are designed to help students transition smoothly from education to employment.
One of the programme’s notable success stories is Daniel Booker, a former Newtown College student. After studying engineering and business at the college, Daniel met Rachel Jones from Interior Product Group IPG during an employer engagement visit. Rachel’s presentation on the company’s opportunities sparked Daniel’s interest. With the college’s support in employment preparation, Daniel secured a role at IPG/Morlands. He has since trained as a forklift truck driver and is eager to progress within the company, thanks to Rachel’s guidance.
Recent visits from local businesses have further enriched the programme:
- Dulson Training Ltd: Adam Mathews captivated students with an engaging session on the realities of being a professional driver. He covered essential working rules and shared real-world insights, including a demonstration of the tachograph in his classroom vehicle. Adam’s humorous anecdotes about road detours, quirky encounters, and satnav mishaps left students both entertained and informed.
- Bute Energy: Kirsty Lees, Senior Land Manager, discussed renewable energy generated from wind parks in Wales. She highlighted the Welsh government’s target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and the various career opportunities at Bute Energy. Students enjoyed a hands-on activity building a model wind turbine.
- MAWW Fire and Rescue: John Tanner provided students with an opportunity to explore career paths in the fire service and gain hands-on experience with some of the equipment.
Enterprise and Employability Officer Newton Brown expressed his enthusiasm for the programme, stating, “It has been fantastic to collaborate with so many different local businesses and have them share their experiences with our students. It’s a great chance for students to learn about local career options. The Employer in Residence programme is available to local businesses, and we encourage any interested parties to contact me to arrange a visit.”
