Brecon Beacons College Year 1 Business Level 3 students, Faith McKeever and Tom Wilding have been highly commended in the Skills Competition Wales: Enterprise Challenge held in Newport.
They created the idea of Tabby Tearooms, a cat cafe that would be based in Brecon. The idea came from Faith who has always wanted to start a business like a cat cafe but never thought she would be able to do it. Tom then came up with the name and created the logo on Canva, making it a real team effort.
On the day of the challenge, the students had to set up their own trade stand using items they had made themselves, including posters and coffee cups with their logos on. The trade stands gave all the competitors the chance to circulate and mix with each other, enabling them to meet new people and see what the ideas the other competitors had.
The competition also included a presentation made by the students to inform to the judges all the plans of their proposed business, giving the students the chance to present in front of people, building their confidence and giving them a taste of what it’s like to run a business.
It was Business Level 3 tutor Michelle Dorise-Turral second time entering her students into the competition, and she was delighted with the outcome. “It was great practice for them and the highly commended will look great on their CV’s,” she said.
Tom said: “The competition was a good day and good fun. It helped build my confidence when presenting” with Faith saying it was “a good insight into starting a business.”
