Groundbreaking MRI Facility Launches at Llandarcy Academy of Sport

New MRI machine at Llandarcy Academy of Sport

A Bold New Era for Healthcare and Sports Science in Wales

A new chapter in healthcare and sports science has begun with the official launch of the state-of-the art MRI diagnostic facility at NPTC Group of Colleges, Llandarcy Academy of Sport. This pioneering project, a partnership between Darcy Healthcare and the College, under its subsidiary Llandarcy Park Ltd., is set to revolutionise medical diagnostics and sports rehabilitation in the region.

The collaboration brings together leading healthcare professionals and cutting-edge technology to enhance patient care, streamline diagnostic pathways, and offer elite-level services to both athletes and the wider community. The launch marks a significant milestone in making high-quality healthcare more accessible and efficient.

Darcy Healthcare, led by Consultant Radiologist Dr Gavin Claque, is built on the expertise of experienced NHS and private sector specialists. Their mission is clear: to improve diagnostic efficiency and put patients first.

“Healthcare needs to be ambitious, forward-thinking, and community driven. Our partnership with NPTC Group is a perfect fit for these values,” said Dr. Clague. “By challenging traditional diagnostic pathways, we can deliver faster, more accurate results – whether for peace of mind or life-saving early detection.”

A prime example of this innovation is the new Prostate Assessment Service, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK. This groundbreaking clinic compresses what was once a six-week, ten appointment process into a single visit, integrating MRI scans and other critical tests. With prostate cancer affecting 1 in 8 men in the UK, early detection can make all the difference.

Recognising the increase in demand for accessible healthcare, Darcy Healthcare has also introduced a self-referral MRI and ultrasound scans, empowering patients with more control over their health and alleviating pressure on NHS wating lists.

The integration of advanced diagnostics with elite sports rehabilitation is a game changer for sports injury rehabilitation and is what truly sets this facility apart. The new Multi-Disciplinary Sports Injury Clinic unites top-tier specialists, including Sports Medicine Consultant Mark Ridgewell; Specialist Physiotherapist Ant Carter; and Mr Clague himself. This collaborative approach delivers fast, accurate diagnosis and tailored rehabilitation plans, ensuring both professional and amateur athletes receive world-class care.

Additionally, the One-Stop Back Pain Clinic, led by Dr Tishi Ninan and Physiotherapist Ian Burns, streamlines treatment by providing immediate MRI scans, on the spot diagnoses and personalised treatment plans – all within a single visit.

The project is testament to the transformative potential of partnerships between education and healthcare. Mark Dacey, CEO of NPTC Group of Colleges emphasises the broader vision.

“This facility is not just about diagnostic services; it’s about creating opportunities—for our students, our athletes, and our communities. Llandarcy Academy of Sport was always meant to be more than just a training ground; it is a centre of excellence. The introduction of medical diagnostics alongside sports performance and rehabilitation takes it to an entirely new level.”

The facility also strengthens NHS partnerships, with Darcy Healthcare securing its first contract with Swansea Health Board to provide cardiac MRI scans for long-waiting patients.

The venture is more than just a business initiative – it’s about giving back to the community. Llandarcy Academy of Sport has already made a significant impact, from re-opening the Cymmer Afan Swimming Pool to hosting world-class teams like the All Blacks and the Wallabies. It has also been home to the Ospreys who use the facilities to train and recover. Now, with this diagnostic expansion, the facility is cementing its role as a leader in health, well-being and medical invocation.

With 54 acres of potential, Llandarcy Academy of Sport continues to expand, with several exciting new developments on the horizon. This is just the beginning of a transformative journey in how healthcare and sports science integrate to improve lives.

Mr Clague summed it up best: “We are in the right place, working with the right people, for the right reasons. Together, we are redefining healthcare and ensuring that our community has access to the very best.”
