Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy – VTCT (Part-Time)
Course Overview
The course builds on skills introduced on the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy and develops advanced sports massage techniques, including soft tissue release, trigger points, neuromuscular technique, connective tissue massage and muscle energy technique.
The course will also equip learners with complex clinical assessment skills, covering the major joints of the body. By the end of the course, you will be able to obtain insurance and practice with a sports club or work with private clients.
The course tutor has many years of experience in the field of sports therapy including the London Olympics and Commonwealth Games, whilst running a successful specialist clinic.
What entry requirements do I need?
- The entry requirements for the course is the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy, or equivalent.
If I gain the qualification, what can I study next?
- A number of students who successfully complete the course apply to university to study a related course, for example the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy.
If I gain the qualification, where can I gain employment?
- It is possible to either work on a self-employed basis, for example in a private gym, or as part of a multidisciplinary sporting team, such as Swansea City FC.
What is the average salary in this industry?
- Working in a private capacity, hourly treatment rates are between £30-£40. However, the salaries offered by professional sporting teams vary between £25,000—£45,000 per annum.
What additional skills would benefit me when I look for employment?
- If the student is aiming to work with a professional sports team, a range of additional skills are required: client confidentiality, the ability to work flexible hours, attention to detail, and the capability to operate as part of a multi-disciplinary team. If the student’s preference is to establish a private clinic and work on a self-employed basis, additional skills such as digital literacy and the ability to build and manage a client base are needed.
How long is the course?
- The course runs over 34 weeks, usually from September to June.
How many hours per week will I have to attend?
- Attendance is 3 hours from 6-9pm on one evening per week.
Do I have to currently be working in the industry?
- Students are not required to currently be working in the industry, however, many students who enrol on the course are already working in the industry on a self-employed basis or are employed as part of a professional sports team.
Do I need any additional equipment?
- Several specialist textbooks are recommended, a list of which is provided during induction, but purchase of these is not compulsory.
Will I sit an examination? And if so, when?
- There are no examinations for this course.
How will I be assessed?
- The qualification comprises of three units and must be successfully completed to gain the full qualification. The course involves a combination of written workbooks and practical assessments.
Do I have to pay all at once?
- Students can pay for the course in full; however, it is possible to spread the cost of the course over instalments. Student finance will be able to provide details on the current arrangements.
Are there any additional costs?
- Students are required to purchase a college kit (polo shirt and tracksuit bottoms). This is arranged during induction and the current cost is £40.
