Course Overview
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dance is a full-time further education course designed for students who are interested in a career in dance or within the wider dance industry.
The course is designed to provide specialist, work-related training in dance, through a variety of dance disciplines, giving students skills relatable to the real world and are transferable to studio dance practice and auditions for dance at higher education/employment.
All students train as part of One Vision Dance Company and are working towards achieving a career within the dance, musical theatre or performing arts industry. Current and previous students have taken part in workshops with National Dance Company Wales, Richard Alston’s Dance Company, Rambert Dance Company, Trinity Laban and attended dance classes at Pineapple Dance Studios. Many students train with National Youth Dance Wales and progress successfully to higher levels of dance and musical theatre training after completion of the course.
If students want to learn in an exciting, vibrant and challenging environment where focusing on themselves as individual dance artists is appealing, then this is the best course for them.
5 GCSEs A*-C including English. A relevant Level 2 qualification, plus an interview and two week initial review at college. Previous dance experience is highly desirable and students should have an interest in training as a multi-disciplined dancer.
A commitment to extra-curricular dance activities in association with LIFT Dance Company, Christmas Dance Production and Summer Dance Festival is mandatory.
The recognised progression route is onto a higher level dance course at either vocational dance institutions or at university. In recent years students have progressed to; The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Trinity Laban, London Studio Centre, Shock Out, The Urdang Academy, Arts Educational School, Laine Theatre Arts, Bird College, and Dance Addict. Additionally students have progressed to; University of Roehampton, Middlesex University, University of Gloucestershire, Bath Spa University, University of Chichester, University of Bedfordshire and University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Course graduates have employment prospects throughout the dance and creative arts industries, including; movement therapist, dancer, choreographer, dance teacher, dance psychologist and dance Journalist.
This course is reflective of dance training across the UK, in an industry where hard work, talent and a desire to succeed is extremely important.
Course units include, but are not limited to; Dance Choreography Jazz/Musical Theatre/Tap Dance, Contemporary Dance, Commercial Dance, Classical Ballet and Dance Improvisation.
You will learn via regularly taught, industry reflective, vocational and sector leading dance classes, heavily centred around practical performance coursework and supported by written evaluations and skills review. All taught activities are focused within a range of dance disciplines including: Ballet; Jazz; Tap; Contemporary; Improvisation; Performance; Commercial; Dance Theatre; Dance Workshop; Musical Theatre Dance.
Assessment is largely based on practical performance and supported by written evaluations with reviews. The course provides each student with the opportunity to perform in five assessment evenings throughout the academic year.
Costs will vary. There will be additional course-related costs for dance workshops, dance uniform, costumes and educational dance visits.
