Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core City & Guilds (Full-Time)
Course Overview
The Level 2 City & Guilds, Health and Social Care Core qualification is a full-time further education course designed for students who are 16+ who and are interested in a career in the Health, Social or Childcare Sector. This course is in the School of Health, Social and Childcare (HSC).
The qualification includes a range of units all designed to provide the knowledge and skills required for working in Health & Social Care and Childcare settings and will allow learners to develop an understanding of the core prinicples and values that underpin Health, Social Care and Childcare practice. Successful completion of the course supports progression onto L3 courses within Health, Social or Childcare. As part of the qualification, learners will complete one day per week work placement, in either a childcare or a health and social care setting. To take part in placements, all learners are required to undertake a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check.
YOU WILL STUDY
You will study a wide range of topics over the course of two years, some of these are shown below.
• The principles and values of health and social care (adults, children, and young people)
• Health and wellbeing of (adults, children, and young people)
• Professional practice as a health and social care worker
• Safeguarding
• Health and Safety in health and social care
2 GCSEs C or above, ideally, to include Maths and/or English.
Following successful completion of the L2 Core qualification learners can choose to study:
Level 3 WJEC Foundation and Extended Diploma in either Childcare OR Health and Social Care which will allow for progression at higher education.
This is a full-time qualification that is run over 1 year.
WORK PLACEMENT AND ENGAGEMENT WITHIN THE SECTOR
As well as studying the theory, you will also have the added advantage of a compulsory work placement within the sector for one day per week usually from the second term, and this allows you to put the theory into practice. A wide range of professionals who currently work in health and social care and childcare provide an insight into working in the sectors when they visit the college to give talks when you will have the chance to ask them questions. There will also be compulsory visits to the Senedd and to health and social care settings.
There is also an opportunity to take part in skills competitions.
A variety of teaching and assessment methods will be used, including, case studies, external examinations and multiple choice tests, presentations and you will be required to work independently to carry out extensive research for some of your assessments.
