Ruth Calvert lecturer at Newtown College has recently graduated from The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) with an MA in Professional Practice: Theatre and Drama Facilitation with Distinction.

The University, known as LIPA, is a world-leading provider of university-level performing and creative arts training.

Ruth explained how the course suited her learning requirements with mainly work-based assignments and periods of intense training at LIPA. This allowed Ruth to maintain professional practice while refining and developing skills further. The course comprised units such as advanced facilitation, critical perspectives, executive effectiveness, and directing for and with young people.

Ruth said: “Whilst on the course I had fantastic opportunities such as teaching and directing at LIPA, working with a mentee of Augusto Boal, and learning from outstanding industry experts. One particular highlight was being congratulated by Sir Paul McCartney on stage at the graduation ceremony.”

“I was able to undertake this course thanks to the fantastic encouragement and support I received from the College staff development and management teams, and I’m really excited to be able to now share the knowledge and experience I have gained with the performing arts students as we continue to develop the course and move in new and exciting directions.”

Rachel Kehoe, Head of School for Creative Arts and Digital Industries said: “Congratulations Ruth on earning your MA in Professional Practice. Your dedication, hard work, and achievement show your ongoing passion for the Arts and are also an excellent example for our learners who will benefit from your knowledge and expertise.”
