Newtown College Receives Donation of Original Laura Ashley Fabrics for Sustainable Fashion Course

Newtown College Sustainable Fashion & Design Course has recently been donated a large selection of original Laura Ashley printed fabrics.

Lecturers and students on Level 3 Sustainable Fashion & Design were extremely excited to receive the donated of fabrics from the Laura Ashley archive. They include large amounts of upholstery and lightweight, mostly in natural materials, all with original Laura Ashley signature prints.

Lecturer Carys Jones said: “We are very grateful for the donation of these original Laura Ashley fabrics. Mid Wales has a strong connection with Laura Ashley, and it’s been fantastic for our learners to have the opportunity to design and create one of a kind handcrafted pieces, transmitting new life into these unused original, iconic, pieces of fabric.”

New learners on the Level 3 Sustainable Fashion & Design course dedicated three weeks of their full-time course to repurposing the donated fabrics. The project ‘Innovative Creations with Laura Ashley Fabrics’ focused on creating womenswear garments such as dresses and tops as well as accessories such tote bags and jewellery.

The Sustainable Fashion learners presented their final work at the end of September.

This new Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sustainable Fashion and Design is set to see some exciting projects. The course supports creative thinking and experimentation, and therefore helps develop individual interests seeing the creation of new design concepts and with contextual research and practice can lead to a choice of potential career options such as; textiles, installation, fashion, costume, accessories or interiors. Fashion and Textiles can lead onto a career into the aforementioned, as well as styling, TV and theatre, illustration, fashion buying and merchandising, retail management, millinery, pattern cutting and construction, plus many more.

Newtown College is soon to introduce a range of short courses in addition to the full-time Level 3 Sustainable Fashion and Design course. These courses come as part of an exciting launch to of a new Fashion Academy to be located at Pryce Jones Building.
