A Level Law students from Neath College proudly secured second place in the recent Young Citizens’ Bar Mock Trial Competition, marking their second consecutive year as runners-up to Monmouth School. Competing alongside seven other schools, Neath College students showcased exceptional talent, preparation, and teamwork, bringing pride to their college and highlighting the dedication of both students and staff.

Since the start of the academic year, these students have dedicated countless hours to preparing for the regional heats. They were guided by a committed law team and mentored by Mari Watkins, a professional barrister from 9 Park Place, Cardiff. The Bar Mock Trial Competition provides young people with a valuable opportunity to understand the impact of law in daily life and gain firsthand experience with the judicial system.

Karen Hill, Law Lecturer and non-practising solicitor, praised the students’ commitment and teamwork: “I am incredibly proud of each student. They were remarkable. Whether acting as barristers, witnesses, ushers, court clerks, or jurors, every student contributed to making this experience extraordinary.”

Participating in the competition helps students sharpen critical thinking, argumentation, and public speaking skills, boosting their self-confidence and employability. The event also offers a unique opportunity for students to engage with legal professionals, deepening their understanding of the legal system and potential career paths within it.

Ellen Forde Spender, Associate Professor at Swansea University and mother of participant Imogen Spender, expressed her gratitude, saying: “A great teacher creates opportunities for students. My daughter had an incredible experience acting as a barrister in a law competition held in Cardiff Crown Court. A huge thanks to her lecturer, Karen Hill, for organising the event, supporting students through preparation, and dedicating her Saturday to attend with them.”

This competition has enriched Neath College students’ understanding of law and justice, equipping them with insights and skills that will benefit them in their academic and professional journeys.
