The AS Level / A Level English Language course focuses on understanding the basics of language at various levels and improving their English skills. Language is placed in its wider social and global contexts and students will look at a wide range of texts from biographies, fiction and non-fiction, writing for children and television scripts.
Applying for AS Levels or A Levels? Click ‘Apply Now’ on any ONE of the subjects you are interested in studying. Complete the online application form, where you will be asked to specify your other two choices. Then book an Interview appointment to meet the tutors and discuss your preferred choices.
A minimum of six GCSEs at Grade C or above including English Language at Grade B and GCSE English Literature at Grade C. Maths Grade C is desirable.
University courses: English Literature/Language & Creative Writing, Journalism, Media, Law, Sociology.
Additionally an A level in English Language is an excellent accompaniment to more specific A levels such as the sciences and arts. Career progression: Journalism, teacher/lecturer, interpreter, and politics.

Unit 1: Exploring Language: This unit encourages learners to engage with language use in different situations. It gives them the opportunity to apply their critical skills and their language knowledge.
Unit 2: Language Issues and Original and Critical Writing: This unit encourages learners to engage with language issues and to use language creatively.

Unit 3: Language over Time: This unit encourages learners to engage with language across time. It gives them the opportunity to apply their analytical skills and their knowledge of language change.
Unit 4: Spoken Language and Creative Re-casting: This unit encourages learners to engage with spoken language and to produce an original piece of writing. It is designed to give them opportunities to apply their analytical skills and to communicate creatively in different ways.
Unit 5: Language and Identity: This unit gives opportunities for language research which has a personal relevance. It is designed to engage learners with the theme of language and identity.
There are 5 units over two years, four of which are assessed through examination and one with a written assessment. Units 2 and Units 4 have a strong focus on creative writing.
