The AS Level / A Level English Literature course is a Full-time Further Education course within the Sixth Form Academy (SFA). It is designed for students who are interested in progressing their English studies.
It is divided into five units, two at AS and three at A2 and assessed through external examinations and one prose study.
You will explore poetry, drama and prose texts stylistically and historically whilst developing the quality of your own detailed academic writing. Autonomous reading and relevant academic research is also expected of you at this level.

A minimum of six GCSEs at Grade C or above including English Language. English Language and Maths Grade B desirable

Unit 1: Prose and Drama (closed book): Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre: Caryl Churchill's Top Girls.
Unit 2: Poetry Post 1900 (open book, clean copy): Phillip Larkin's The Whitsun Weddings: Carol Ann Duffy's Mean Time.
A2
Unit 3: Poetry Pre-1900 and Unseen Poetry (open book, clean copy):
'William Blake, Selected Poems', Unseen Poetry [essay].
Unit 4: Shakespeare (closed book): William Shakespeare: King Lear.
Unit 5: Prose Study: 2500-3500 word assignment based on the reading of two prose texts [to be decided], one pre-2000 and one post-2000.
At AS Level, there are two exams at the end of the year. One exam for Unit 1 and another for Unit 2.
At A2 Level, there are two exams at the end of the year. One for Unit 3 and another for Unit 4. Additionally there is a coursework element in the second year.
