Multiply: Numeracy for Success: GCSE Mathematics Supported by Agored Cymru Numeracy units (Part-Time)
Course Overview
These flexible numeracy courses are aimed at small groups of adult learners who don’t hold a level 2 numeracy or maths qualification and who are looking to return to education and / or up-skill to enter the employment market. We anticipate working with small community groups or individuals. Lessons can be held at the College campuses across the NPT area, or within local community centres, libraries or outreach centres across the NPT area. While students gain a great deal from in-person delivery and support, there will be opportunities that can be tailored to suit individuals where hybrid or online delivery is more suitable.
All lessons will be delivered by subject specialists and in teacher lead sessions.
To compliment the delivery, suitable digital devices will be provided to the students during the lessons. We will use these to incorporate the use of MathsWatch, an AI, interactive, digital learning platform. There are short videos covering content, practise questions and exam style questions linked to the WJEC GCSE specification. This will give the students opportunities to develop their independent study skills and digital literacy. Students can use the MathsWatch programme when at home, to revisit, revise and further strengthen their understanding of topics covered. They can also work ahead and build up subject knowledge prior to the lessons.
Student fully completing the course and final qualification assessments may be eligible to receive a digital device to keep.

Upskilling in your numeracy skills to a level 2 is a fundamental requirement for future careers. It also can lead you onto a level 3 mathematics or mathematics related courses.
The course will cover 4 Agored Cymru units at level 2, naturally delivering approximately 80% of the GCSE specification. Consequently, there are multiple opportunities throughout the course to achieve Agored Cymru knowledge and qualifications with an end goal of achieving a GCSE maths qualification. The courses can be non-accredited but there will be College certification to recognise achievements.
The Agored Cymru units covered in Strand 2 will be:
Level 2 Number, (RB12CY036)
Level 2 Shape, Space and Measure, (RB12CY038)
Level 2 Algebra and Graphs, (RB12CY035)
Level 2 Data Handling and Probability, (RB12CY037)
Each unit will be delivered over a 7 week period, in 3 hour sessions, giving 21 hours of total delivery time.
Appropriate assessments will be integrated into the delivery time throughout the course and students will be fully supported to prepare for these assessments by their lecturer. Assessments can take a variety of forms, including worksheets, timed tests, or the completion of a portfolio.
The Agored Cymru level 2 units have been mapped against the WJEC GCSE Mathematics specification. There is approximately an 80% overlap. Therefore, while studying the Agored Cymru units the WJEC Mathematics specification will be delivered. Consequently, some students may wish to try the GCSE examinations by May 2024 if they complete all four Agored Cymru units from September 2023. Students will be guided by their lecturers regarding the most appropriate level to attempt, choosing from either the Foundation, Intermediate or Higher tier GCSE Mathematics paper.
